  • Cumbrian Natural Slate

Cumbrian slate is world renowned, with Westmorland green slate and Burlington slate serving ideally as a durable and strong roofing slate for traditional building styles.

Burlington blue grey slate is synonymous with the Lake District and has been used in the region for hundreds of years. Westmorland green slate is also greatly associated with the Lake District, with a large percentage of local buildings using the attractive, subtle blue and green hues of local slates.

The unique colouration of the Cumbrian slates is due to their formation over 500 million years ago. Metamorphosed clay and ash containing various chemical compounds gives the slate its attractive colour.

Cumbrian slate is an ideal way to add character to a property, or to complete a historic building in a manner which is sympathetic with original features. Even though this kind of slate has been in use for hundreds of years, it is still a very effective roofing material, and the techniques using it have barely changed in this time.

Due to the uniqueness of Cumbrian slate and the restrictions in the Lake District where the majority is found, supply of Cumbrian slate can fluctuate, as can the price. With this in mind, feel free to get in touch with us – we promise to find you the best prices.
