Nowadays, more or less everything comes with a warranty. Don’t get us wrong – that’s a great thing. But it does add a layer of complexity to the buying process that most people don’t really consider.
Now, the commonly accepted wisdom is that a longer, broader warranty is better than a shorter, more specific warranty. If that was all there was to it, that’d be just great, but it’s often not. Let’s take an easy example – the vaunted “lifetime guarantee”.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that a lifetime guarantee did exactly what it said on the tin – but what exactly does it say on the tin? Whose lifetime is it referring to? Sure, sometimes a lifetime guarantee means that the product is guaranteed for the lifetime of the owner. Other times, however, it just means the “usual” lifetime of that product (and who do you think gets to decide how long that is?) – and sometimes, that lifetime guarantee has nothing to do with the item itself, and everything to do with something totally external (for instance, when slates are guaranteed for the life of the roof – however long or short that may be).
So hopefully we’ve got you thinking about how important it is to know how long your warranty really lasts. Now let’s think about what it actually covers.
It seems obvious once you give it some thought, but for the most part, warranties have exceptions. In a good warranty, that just means the supplier can’t be held responsible for things truly beyond their control (think lighting damaging your roof). In a shady warranty, however, suppliers can stuff in so many loopholes and legalese that suddenly, they’re not responsible for anything. Then you’re really in trouble.
The worst offenders can be the ones you thought you could trust the most – extended warranties. You pay extra for these beauties, so they must be good right? The supplier wouldn’t leave you hanging after you ponied up that extra cash to make sure your investment was good and safe. That’d be terrible.
Yes. Yes it would be terrible. But they’d do it anyway. You just can’t trust some people.
